Inside AIA Colorado Laying the Foundation for the Future at AIA Colorado by Zachary Taylor Zachary Taylor Zachary Taylor, AIA is the 2019 AIA Colorado Board President. I joined the AIA Colorado board because I believe you get out what you put in. I know that as an AIA Colorado member, I am surrounded by a network of hard-working, innovative A/E/C professionals who share a passion for design, a conviction that it matters and a commitment to improving lives through their work. And I know that by volunteering as board president, I am helping to shape and grow our profession. It is an exciting time to serve in this role, because this year we are especially focused on laying the foundation for the future of the architecture profession and this organization. EXECUTIVE SEARCH We are currently in the middle of a national search process for a new executive to lead AIA Colorado, following Cathy Rosset’s departure in late 2018. We know that our world and the architecture profession are rapidly changing. Because of that, we’re eager to find a CEO who can build upon our more-than-125-year legacy in an innovative way to strengthen architects’ role in Colorado. So far in the search process, we’ve found extremely competitive candidates who will surely support and propel our membership into the future. ADVOCATING FOR THE PROFESSION To be prepared for the future, we must always be aware of legislation that may directly or indirectly affect the design and construction industry. Every year, the AIA Colorado Government Affairs Committee reviews more than 300 proposed bills. If there is something that could affect architects in Colorado, the committee recommends taking a position to the Board 54 | Colorado Construction & Design of Directors. Historically, this process has helped us defend our license and make significant strides in construction defects issues. So far this year, the committee has not yet recommended action for or against a bill, but they’ll continue to monitor until the legislative session ends in May. RESOURCES & PROGRAMS FOR THE FUTURE One of AIA Colorado’s primary goals is to help advance the profession through programs and resources. This year, we have a robust mix of programs scheduled to train future leaders of the architecture community: • The Business of Architecture Series, beginning in June, equips mid-career professionals with the skills they need to lead prosperous firms. • From February through June, we have a variety of sessions which will teach members the latest in designing buildings that have a positive influence on human and environmental health. • The Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program and Emerging Professionals Bootcamps help young architects and associate develop as leaders and lean strategies for being successful in the profession. • Our annual Practice + Design Conference will take place October 31-November 2 with the theme “Future Forward.” During this celebrated event, we’ll dive into the new technologies and strategies that are transforming the work we do every day. As we look toward the future and begin to imagine the possibilities for what our industry might look like in 10, 20, 50 years, I hope you’ll join us.
